MY REVIEW: Silverstein OmniGuard Lip Saver

Kody Myhra March 12, 2022

Hello everyone! With jury and recital season just around the corner, I know the fatigue that hits us all around this time. One of the biggest things I encounter is a sore lip from over practicing or practicing when I am already fatigued. So I figured I would do a little research and test out a few products to see how they work for me! The product I tested this week is Silverstein's OmniGuard.

How does it work?

The Silverstein OmniGuard is a mould or impression that is formed over the lower teeth to prevent the lower jaw from cutting or tearing your bottom lip while playing single-reed instruments. I recently purchased the Single Pack, which comes with the mould material, plastic slips, tweezers, instructions on how to create the impression, and a little carrying case. Once the impression is completed, the mould sits on the bottom teeth while you play your instrument. When not using the OmniGuard, the mould can simply go into the small carrying case that easily fits into any clarinet, saxophone, or instrument case.

What's my review?

I have played around with my OmniGuard for about a week at this point, and I gotta say that I am really enjoying it! I was very skeptical going through the process of making it, but the final product. A lot of the setbacks of the problems with the product were really outweighed by the benefits, which was an A+ in my book!

Some of the pros of this product for me included less lower teeth pressure on my lip, easy traveling and care, the thickness of the product being not too large, and its lifetime, which happens to be for about a year. These were some of the key factors I was looking for when purchasing the product, and they definitely delivered!

A few of the setbacks include the process of making the mould, and having to remake the mould until I got my desired outcome. While the mould-making process was fairly simple, I found it extremely difficult to bring the heated up product to the plastic to fit it over my teeth. I had to go through the impression process about three times until I got my desired fit. Thankfully though, you are able to go through that process multiple times if you need to redo of fix anything on your current mould.

Overall, I would give this product:

I hope this review gave some insight into this product, and I hope that you are able to try it out for yourself! If you have any questions, feel free to leave me a comment, and as always, happy practicing!
